Here are some free utilities that will be useful for accessing the Linux server. You will probably want to use a secure shell (SSH) client like Putty and a secure FTP client like WinSCP or FileZilla.

Putty --a more secure alternative to telnet that uses SSH (secure shell). Use this program for executing shell commands (similar to the commands used in the Windows Command Prompt (or DOS prompt).

WinSCP --a more secure alternative to FTP that also uses SSH. The Linux server does not allow normal FTP access, but you can use this program to copy files to and from the server.

FileZilla The FileZilla client is another program that can copy files between your computer and the class server. FileZilla is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
